Old NFL Box Scores

Post by SeahawkFever »

Hi everyone,

I just got a newspapers.com subscription and plan on going through and searching for some older NFL box scores and game accounts from the 30’s and 40’s.

Any papers I should look at?

And I am re-posting this because when I originally posted it, I put it in the wrong section by accident.

Just curious if anyone knows what older newspapers consistently printed accounts of NFL games from the later 30’s and 40’s.

(Ex: For the Lions what would be a good Detroit area paper to look at, for the Football Pirates as they were known then, what would be a good Pittsburgh paper, etc.)

Was thinking of looking at those accounts and sharing stuff I find that doesn’t appear on their website with Sports Reference.

Ex: I just looked up the regular season games of the 1936 Packers (at least by statistical performance probably one of the best teams of that generation) and I noticed that on Pro Football Reference they don’t list totals for first downs and turnovers for most of their games, but the Newspapers do list interception, fumble and first down totals for both teams in most of those games.
