Not to plug any particular author but I've read Chris Willis' The NFL's 60-Minute Men from cover to cover four times and it is a treasure chest full of knowledge on players like Brock from the two-way era of NFL history.

(Cliff's article is great, too. But Chris covers over 40 players.)
