1984 AFC West discussion

Post by 7DnBrnc53 »

This division may have been the toughest of all-time in the NFL. PRO! Magazine did a feature on the AFC West in their January 1985 issue:

You had three ten-win teams (the surprising Broncos, the Seahawks, and the defending champ Raiders). You also had an OK KC team that finished 8-8, and you had Air Coryell finishing 7-9 (however, they did beat SB-bound Miami and the Bears. They also lost the four games in the division to Denver and the Raiders by seven points or less).

Even with that, they probably should have pulled the plug on Air Coryell at that point and started over, but Don got to stay another year and a half before being let go on October 29, 1986 by owner Alex Spanos.

NFC East was better ... throughout the 1980s.

1975 AFC Central up there, too.

1980s NFC East always had a bad team or two, often the Cardinals ... top to bottom for a single season? Not sure they have one ... but in terms of tough football, sure.

1999 AFC East no bad teams ... can think of a handful of others.

1984 NFC West, though, pretty good teams ... but still ...

How does the 2013 NFC West compare to this group?

It had the Super Bowl champion Seahawks, a 49er team that made the NFC Championship Game (in a game that I’ve seen some retroactively say was the real Super Bowl)

A solid 10-6 Cardinal team that only lost two games outside of the division.

And a 7-9 Rams team that was a bit better than average statistically is the worst of the four.
