Bobby Layne-Two Minute Drill with Pittsburgh 1959

Post by LeonardRachiele »

Week 7-a 14 to 9 Win at Yankee Stadium

The Steelers played a tremendous defensive game limiting the Giants to 187 yards and three field goals. Overcoming three interceptions, Bobby Layne threw two touchdown passes. The first was 21 yards to Jimmy Orr just before halftime. In the fourth quarter with 1:29 seconds remaining, Layne threw a 45 yard pass to Tom Tracy to win the game.

Week 8-a 21 to 20 Win at Cleveland

This was one of the Steelers most exciting games in the 50s. Coupled with a 17 to 7 win in Pittsburgh in the first weekend, the Steelers defeated the Browns twice in 1959. Cleveland was the heavy favorite coming in at 6-2 to Pittsburgh's 3-4-1. After a scoreless first period, Tom Tracy capped two drives with touchdown moves of four and one yards. Milt Plum threw a 70 yard touchdown pass to Ray Renfro. Lou Groza missed the extra point which would be costly. At halftime Steelers 14 Browns 6.

After a scoreless third period, Milt Plum threw two more touchdown passes to Ray Renfro of 27 and 70 yards. With just over two minutes left, Bobby Layne and Company went on a steady 73 yard drive; with an 18 yard touchdown pass to Gern Nagler with 41 seconds left. Nagler caught the ball underneath the crossbar. In a sense, Nagler used the right goal post as a blocker. Bobby Layne kicked the extra point and the Steelers won 21 to 20. This all but eliminated the Browns' chances to win the Eastern Conference Championship.

Cleveland outgained the Steelers with 387 yards to 338 yards. Milt Plum completed 17 of 29 passes for 269 yards and the three mentioned touchdowns to Ray Renfro. In total, Renfro caught five passes for 161 yards. Billy Howton caught five passes for 77 yards. Jimmy Brown carried 15 times for 111 yards.

For Pittsburgh Bobby Layne caught 12 of 20 passes for 126 yards. Jimmy Orr caught four passes for 86 yards. Gern Nagler also caught four passes for 63 yards and the winning touchdown. Tom Tracy carried 24 times for 99 yards.

Whats your take on todays Steelers Leonard? Who would you get at HC? Would you try to bring Rodgers back? Let go of high priced defenders?
