1,000-yard streaks

Post by Bob Gill »

Just thinking about this today, and thought it might make a good question, a two-parter:

1. Who was the first player to run for 1,000 yards five years in a row?

2. Who was the second?

The reason I started thinking about it in the first place: Jim Brown did not do it.

I've found a fun trivia question for the casual NFL fan to be:
Who was the first player to rush for 1,000 yards?
Who was the first to do it twice?
Who was the first to do it two years in a row?

OK... that's three questions... but five times in a row?
I don't know but will look forward to hearing the answer(s)... and maybe poking around a bit for myself, too.

And upon doing so my second guess (after, like yourself, Jim Brown was my first) Jim Taylor did it five consecutive seasons (1960-64)... but was he the first?

O.J. also did it 1972-76.
Still looking to see who did so first and second... unless those are the answers?

Yes, as far as I know, those are the ones.

Two guys you don't hear about very much these days. Taylor, I guess because it seems he was never very well liked, even by guys on his own team. As for Simpson, he WAS well-liked, but sometime around 30 years ago people's opinions seemed to change. Can't imagine why.

Deserved or not Taylor was called out by Jerry Kramer in both is books Instant Replay and Distant Replay for welching on a loan.
If he treated others on the team the same way then I can understand their dislike of him.
Really, how much is your reputation and honor worth... especially if it is going to be sullied for all time?

And as for that Simpson guy... eh, who knows?

I remember that Tony Dorsett was the first to gain 1,000 yardas in his first five seasons, but in the very next season the 1982 strike came and cancelled 7 games, erasing the posiibility for Dorsett to continue the streak and others (like Earl Campbell) to achieving it.

I remember the first time somebody hit 1,000 in his first THREE seasons. I was about to say his name, but I think I'll leave it as a question, to see if anybody else remembers. He didn't wind up having a career in a class with Dorsett, Campbell and the others.

John Brockington was the first to run for 1.000 yards in his first three seasons.

Yeah, he's the one. It was kind of a big deal at the time, but he never came close again and the accomplishment seemed to lose its luster.

I think that may well depend on whether or not you saw him play.
His incredible three year run (1971-73) was when I started to watch and understand football and I was immensely impressed with him then (as was just about everyone else at the time) and I still remember him today as one very good running back.
At 6'1" and 225 pounds he ran low to the ground and with good speed. And he was a nightmare to try to bring down.
Unfortunately Dan Devine ran him into the ground and Brockington was never the same back after 1973-74.

Not a streak, and a season before his team would join the NFL, but what runner became the first documented 1,000-yard rusher in pro football history? (may as well include the team and year in your answer)
