After eight years, bitter reality had set in, the Niners were gonna give up on him a year early than a year late. Like Foreman, Holmes, Davis, Sims and Andrews, it seemed to end too soon.
The word around here was that Eddie D. was so upset over "the fumble" he insisted Roger be cut loose.
Another brilliant decision made by emotion... sigh.
Even as emotional as Eddie D could get, I don't think he would stoop that low. Craig was just getting old, along with a few other veterans that were dismissed after that 1990 season, which they probably would have been anyway if they had achieved the three-peat. Keena Turner was cut in the offseason, but was resigned last-minute to a deal. Eric Wright was around, but was over the hill, and barely played. Same with Mike Wilson. All had been with the team since 1981. If I recall correctly around training camp time Ronnie Lott had a presser outside talking about how disgruntled he was that some of the veterans like Turner, and Wright were essentially getting phased out of the organization. But along with Craig it was the right thing to move on from those guys. Ronnie still had some left in the tank, but also chose to sign with the Raiders as a free agent. A lot of negative emotions from that fallout in 1991, and I think it effected the win total that season. Ask Charles Haley his feelings on Steve Young at the time.

Walsh always vowed to never let his teams get old. And he did let guys go with some tread on the tire. Early on, he traded for a few vets but they were quick fixes for leadership. Mostly a draft team after that, exceptions for QB. So, yeah they were all going to get released or traded soon

But, that said, I read same thing about his anger about fumble. True? Don't know. Could be just a rumor, but was part of narrative in the day. Might be one of those situations when it was more than one thing ... ?
