Re: Which Super Bowl drought do you find the most surprising?

I'd have to run the odds but I think the Steelers never making a championship game until 1974 would probably be worse.

Given that in the pre Super Bowl days a lot of times they were only one of six teams, whereas the Lions are now one of sixteen.

Re: What do you consider the greatest quarterback match-up in a Super Bowl game?

Well, we almost had ourselves a Mark Sanchez/Caleb Hanie Showdown in 2010! https://profootballresearchers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=47185&hilit=Hanie#p47185 How about Tony Eason-Dieter Brock in 1985? If the Rams somehow manage to beat the Bears (50 mph winds in Chicago make for a goofy game?) c...

Re: The 1971/1972 Dolphins vs the 1971 Cowboys

Staubach was more of a big play QB, not really like Montana or even Bart Starr. The big play part worked well as a contrast to Landry. I don't like the 1972 Cowboys that much. I don't even think they could have beaten the 1972 Packers in the playoffs. Because Landry never would have done the five ma...

Re: Would the Dallas Cowboys have defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in SB XVI?

Good opinions, though I think the Cowboys win. Munoz and Martin would have had a great matchup but I dont think the Bengals contain Jones and White. You have to account for Pearson, Hill and Dorsett on defense as well, which would have been alot. The Chargers I feel, could move on Dallas or SF but ...

Re: Best team to not make the playoffs? 1967 Baltimore?

The '67 Colts missed out behind the Rams, and the next year, the Rams missed out behind the Colts. Not as much of a miss because the '68 Rams were 10-3-1, and they lost both of their games against the Colts. But they were also 5th in points and 3rd in points allowed, and #1 for fewest yards allowed...

Re: Best team to not make the playoffs? 1967 Baltimore?

1962 Lions (11-3 record) Fifth in points scored (out of 14 teams), second in points allowed, and first in yards allowed. Their defense also had 24 INT's and 49 QB sacks. Seven Pro Bowlers (two on offense, five on defense). Came close to sweeping the Packers that year (didn't they give away their We...

Re: Would the Dallas Cowboys have defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in SB XVI?

I think Walsh preferred the Bengals because he was coaching conservatively. Look at how much the 49ers ran the ball with not much to show for it. The Chargers would turn the ball over but they would keep coming at you and it would force Walsh and Montana to pass more downfield than Walsh really want...

Not a good enough defense. Kenny Easley's already in as well as Largent, don't need a third player from a mediocre team.

Re: The 1996 NFL Season: 30 Years Later

I’m not sure how much Pro Football Reference’s Simple Rating System is respected here. I’m sure it has flaws, but it does take into account SOS, etc. I did an experiment using SRS to try to parse and give context to some of the arguments being made here. I chose the top three SRS teams in each conf...
