Re: The Hail Mary - 50 Years Later
If the Hail Mary pass had failed, the Vikings would have hosted the Rams in the 1975 NFC Championship game. The Vikings of that era always said the 1975 team was their best, better than the teams that made (and flopped in) the Super Bowl.

Re: Ken Anderson, Phillip Rivers - if you can only pick ONE of them?
I've read that if Ken Anderson had led the Bengals to a comeback victory over the 49ers in Super Bowl XVI, he would now be in the Pro Football HOF.

Re: When did the Super Bowl become the Super Bowl?
As one who was around back then, Super Bowl III was when the Super Bowl became the Super Bowl. In the pregame buildup, Joe Namath said, "We're going to win. I guarantee it." The Colts were 17-18 point favorites. The Packers winning 35-10 and 33-14 over the Chiefs and Raiders in the first t...

Re: 2025 Hall of Very Good Election Results
I remember Clem Daniels for catching the long pass for TDs. You can see it on the you tube of Clem Daniels highlights. Curt Gowdy, who was the AFL TV announcer in the 60s would say, "Clem Daniels can catch the long pass for you. They like to isolate him on a linebacker." This was the kind ...

Re: Greatest Performances Against The Greatest Teams
Is there any individual on the Lions defense that stood out in that 1962 Thanksgiving game against the Packers? If so they probably deserve a mention. DT Roger Brown, he sacked Bart Starr seven times, according to his Wikipedia bio, once for a safety. Another sack forced a fumble by Starr, recovere...

Re: OJ Simpson vs Steel Curtain in 1975
Larry Felser, Buffalo writer, and Sporting News columnist would mention this game often. When Walter Payton broke O.J.'s single game rushing record in 1977 with a 275 yard game against the Vikings, Felser wrote something like, "Let's see Walter Payton have a game like O.J. Simpson had against t...

Re: Big 49er Receivers With Bad Luck ... Parks, Kwalick and MacAfee
The compensation for Parks was the #1 1969 draft choice AND Kevin Hardy, who had been the Saints' #1 DC in 1968. I think this was one of the Rozelle Rule compensations where Rozelle actually determined the compensation if the teams couldn't agree. Hardy was an injured bust so it wound up not matter...

Re: Time of Scoring Plays
That's an interesting topic. Being a Lions fan, four such games come immediately to mind. All ended with a TD pass with less than a minute to play (some on final play of game): Detroit at Green Bay, Sept. 25, 1955---Rote TD pass to Knafelc, GB won 20-17 Baltimore at Detroit, Oct. 20, 1957--Layne TD...
