Re: 1978 Philadelphia Eagles - Mike Michel
How much grief did Vermeil take for this at the time? Seems like a textbook case of neglect of a key position. Not to mention expecting Michel to do a job that wasn't the reason he was on the team to begin with. I know we weren't very far from kickers playing other positions (or the other way around...

Re: Forty Niners/Colts history
That 1995 win over the 49ers began a stretch of three straight seasons in which the Colts beat the defending Super Bowl champion.
I was at the 2013 game, but I remember absolutely nothing about it. Colts won 27-7.

Re: 1970-1977 with a 5 seed
Thanks TMT ... I wasnt sure how those teams were. I thought Buffalo rated higher than the Jets in 1981? Without the Jets, maybe the Raiders win it all with rookie Marcus Allen in 1982? Could Theisman and the Redskins have upset the 49ers in 1984? Without the Patriots, I feel the Dolphins would have...

Re: 1970-1977 with a 5 seed
Conversely, what happens if you take away the fifth wild card from 1978-89? 1978 - NFC stays the same, but no Luv Ya Blue as it would have been Dolphins-Steelers and Broncos-Patriots. 1979 and 1980 - No change. 1981 - Both conferences change. AFC would have been Jets-Bengals and Chargers-Dolphins. N...

Re: Was the NFL in 1971 that weak?
If 1971 was..."weak", which I'm not sure I feel that way about, then the year before was well weaker thus should be the season this thread is based on instead. The only team in 1970 that was championship-caliber-enough going into those playoffs was Minnesota. But they had their flaws as w...

Re: Notable Halloween NFL Games
I was at that Colts-Broncos game. It was 45-10 at halftime. My buddy and I, HS-aged, were contemplating a record point total. The funniest thing about that game came late when Denver tried an onside kick for reasons only they could explain in a 55-23 game. Colts tight end Pat Beach recovered the kic...

Re: Joe Gibbs' 3 Super Bowls- a great achievment or an asterisk?
I split the baby on some of this. The 1991 team was a well-oiled machine and was never really challenged. Not Washington’s fault that they stood well above the rest. The 1982, and especially, the 1987 teams do deserve a bit of an asterisk. No way to truly compare either one of those seasons to any o...

Re: Race for the final NFC wild card spot, 1981
I have the image of Ray Stachowicz getting a punt blocked at Shea burned into my mind as part of the Packers’ demise.

Re: "Teams of Destiny" you believed in and were disappointed by
The 2003 Packers definitely had that look, starting with the memorable win at Oakland after Favre's dad died. Then came the Nate Poole miracle in Arizona that gave them the division, then the Al Harris pick-six to win the wild card playoff against Seattle. All that was dashed on the rocks thanks to...
